After much anticipation, FX recently revealed that What We Do in the Shadows Season 6 will be premiering on October 21. The first three episodes out of eleven episodes in the last season will premiere on the same day.

Consisting of ten episodes and airing in the summer of 2023, What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 was a rollercoaster. Seeing as Season 6 will be the final one, we expect that the upcoming season will be just as chaotic.

Everything you need to remember about What We Do in the Shadows Season 5:

Guillermo’s Vampirism

The main conflict of Season 5 is Guillermo’s desire for vampirism. On What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Epsiode 1, “The Mall,” Guillermo bribes Derek to turn him into a vampire. However, it doesn’t go as well as he expected.

The vampiric side effects don’t really become obvious as Guillermo’s Van Helsing blood is actively fighting off the vampirism. This results in Guillermo becoming a hybrid vampire, where he shares some vampiric traits but is still human.

Laszlo discovers Guillermo’s problem on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 2, “A Night Out with the Guys.” He tells Guillermo that he’s screwed but offers to perform experiments to figure out why the vampirism is presenting so strangely.

This results in a collection of strange Guillermo-like creatures that Laszlo accidentally creates on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 7, “Hybrid Creatures.”

The biggest problem is that Guillermo didn’t allow Nandor to turn him into a vampire. All the vampires emphasize that this is the ultimate betrayal a familiar can do, so Guillermo has to hide his vampirism from his master.

However, the Guide accidentally reveals that Guillermo has been turned into a vampire on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 9, “A Weekend at Morrigan Manor.” As expected, Nandor has an extreme reaction and threatens to kill Guillermo.

Guillermo runs away, fleeing to a remote motel on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 10, “Exit Interview.” Just as things are starting to look bleak for the familiar, Nandor realizes that he doesn’t actually want to kill Guillermo.

Instead, he kills Derek, therefore lifting the curse of vampirism from Guillermo and returning the familiar and master to the status quo.

Nadja and the Guide

The other main conflict during Season 5 is the hex that Nadja believes has been placed on her. She experiences a string of unfortunate events and attributes it to an ancient hex.

However, there isn’t actually a hex. Instead, the Guide makes Nadja believe there is a hex to get Nadja to appreciate her more.

Nadja doesn’t realize this and tries different methods to lift the hex. For example, she teaches a night class on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 7, “Hybrid Creatures.” Unfortunately, none of her attempts work.

Ultimately, the Guide feels fed up with being underappreciated and traps the vampires on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 9, “A Weekend at Morrigan Manor.” She then realizes that the vampires do enjoy her company and frees them.

Colin Robinson

On Season 5, Colin Robinson briefly runs for Staten Island comptroller on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 4, “The Campaign.”

This decision occurs after the vampires attempt to throw a pride parade to support Sean’s campaign on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 5, “Pride Parade.”

However, Sean gets injured and drops out, leaving a spot open for Colin. Colin reunites with his ex, Evie, and eventually, Evie ends up running after Colin decides he can’t handle the pressure.

At the end of the day, it seems like Colin seems most happy as his regular, boring self.

Other Things That Happened on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5
  • Baron Afanas briefly returns on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 8, “The Roast.” He finds out Guillermo tried to kill him but makes amends.
  • Patton Oswalt guest stars on the finale. However, he has a short-lived appearance as Nandor kills him.
  • Guillermo almost gets put down after the vampire doctors discover his vampirism on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 6, “Urgent Care.” However, Nadja has a sweet moment and saves him from death.
  • Laszlo has a small depressive episode where he’s unresponsive. It turns out that he was just contemplating how to organize his library.
  • The vampires’ identities are almost revealed on local news. However, thanks to Guillermo’s quick thinking, they are saved from being targeted.
  • John Slattery makes a guest appearance on What We Do in the Shadows Season 5 Episode 6, “Urgent Care.” However, the most interesting part of the episode seems to be when Colin reveals he knew famous historical figures like Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett.

What We Do in the Shadows airs Mondays at 10/9c on FX and streams the next day on Hulu.
